Shoe Care Tips

There is no point in beating around the bush, so let’s straight away accept that we all love shoes. Even if we don’t have an ‘obsession’, we still need them for practical reasons and would still buy at least a pair. The thing with shoes is that if you want them to be good, they’re going to cost you a fair amount. So, it is to our own advantage if we try and take care of our shoes, so the need to buy new shoes doesn’t keep punching holes in our budget. The longer your shoes last, the less money you have to spend on them and the bigger collection you can make. Here are some of the best tips to help you take care of shoes and to ensure a long life for them:

Brush them often

Whether you have leather shoes or you have suede shoes, brushing them regularly is a good way to maintain them. Every time you wear them, give your leather shoes a good polish before and after, and your suede shoes a good brush.

Protect suede

Suede shoes face a lot of risk every time they are worn. Invest in a good suede spray that repels water, salt and mud. Just make sure that you test the spray first because some sprays might just change the color of the material.

Prevent water damage

You might get caught in the rain or some car might splash you; it isn’t always possible to save your shoes from water. But, if they do get wet, as soon as you can, stuff newspapers in them and put them away in an open room to dry. In no circumstance should you use a hair dryer or place them near a heater, as that will only cause more damage.

Polishing the shoes

Drop the sponge applicator liquid polishes, because you never know what is in the sponge. Instead, always go for a natural hair brush and a normal polish for your leather.

Layer with rubber

For your dress shoes, before you take them out for a night on the town, add a layer of rubber under the sole. It will serve two purposes – provide extra protection to the sole and provide you some extra traction.

Maintain their shape

If you have quite a few shoes and sometimes, some of them sit in the closet for quite a while, make sure that you do not just put them away. Either use shoe trees or stuff them with paper when not in use.

Rotate the shoes

If you continuously wear a pair of shoes every time, they will wear out faster. Make sure that you keep rotating your shoes, to give them time to rest in between.

Taking proper care of your shoes might take a little extra time and effort, but when you see the amount of time your footwear starts lasting, with some attention, it will all be worth it. For more details, visit here.
